Serena Kropus

The late Lady Kropus — wife to Vader Kropus and mother of Lucien Kropus — was a woman of stature, dignity, and heart who believed in her family's legacy and her husband's determination to overcome the wilds of the Farseas. She did not live to see the empire that legacy became: Serena died during Lucien's birth, a loss that marked the Kropus household long after. Vader raised Lucien alone, and those who knew the family well observed that the son who grew without her inherited his father's iron will but little of her warmth.

Diplomat of the Swamp

In her years supporting the House Kropus family's efforts, Serena became acquainted with swamp denizens at all levels of society. She made a point of joining her husband on his travels through the swamp and, in due course, undertook her own visits to settlements and the major cities of the frog, lizard, and fish peoples.

As an accomplished mage of mild but practical skill, she aided these settlements with her abilities — healing, warding, and the small mercies that make difficult lives more livable. Over years of these visits, she came to learn many of the magical traditions practised by the swamp denizens' shamans, earning a trust that the Kropus family name alone could never have purchased.

The Guardian's Grimoire

Serena compiled her collected knowledge into a work known as the Guardian's Grimoire — a record of swamp-native magical traditions representing a unique scholarly achievement: the first systematic documentation of indigenous Farseas magical practice by an outsider who had earned genuine trust from the communities she studied.

The Grimoire is not a trophy of conquest. It is a record made possible by decades of relationship-building and mutual respect, and it remains one of the most important references for understanding the magic of the swamp peoples. What became of the Grimoire after Serena's death is uncertain — whether it passed into Vader's personal keeping, entered a private library, or was displaced during the upheavals that followed Lucien's reign and eventual death is not recorded.

Legacy

Serena's efforts were reflected in the peace along many tenuous borders. In her passing, some treaties held and some were torn — but many endured for decades afterward, a testament to the personal relationships she cultivated rather than any formal political architecture.

Her son Lucien Kropus inherited his father's ruthlessness but not, by most accounts, his mother's diplomatic patience. Some who knew Vader in his later years believed that Lucien's hardness was inseparable from growing up in the absence of the softness Serena had represented.
