Farseas

Known also as (the) Farsea Swamps, Farsea Swamp, Tunlands, and Tun marshes, the Farseas are a massive swamp land beyond the Stormhorns, west of the Cormyrean empire's civil center.

Once two swamps, the Tun marsh and Farseas swamp, these wetlands have grown together to form the gargantuan expanse now known as the "unapproachable west" by the more affluent and fragile of Cormyrean court. They stretch from the foothills of the Stormhorns westward into lands that even the boldest Purple Dragon patrols rarely visit twice.

The swamplands are accessible via the High Road or the Tun River, which acts as a main vein from the Dragonmere and the Sea of Fallen Stars beyond the Throat.

Peoples

The swamp denizens are comprised of several beast races — principally the Lizardpeoples, Bullywugs, and Fishfolk — alongside generations of Drovers communities wherein humanoids and beast races have intermingled, and sometimes mated, to create an extraordinary mixture of citizenry and culture throughout the expanse.

Language

Natives of the swamps share a tongue known by many names but generally referred to as swamp speech, swamp tongue, or swamp spit. Swamp scribble using a Swampers alphabet has also emerged, employing mostly glyphs used by Drovers when marking routes and regions.

Law & Order

In general the swamp lands exist in a tenuous harmony within the natural order. The beast races do not necessarily hunt one another, but predatory nature being what it is, the races of the swamp are not above eating one another where need and opportunity arise.

Civil disputes in the Farseas can be a bloody and terrifying affair when denizens drop civility in favour of more preternatural alternatives.

The Purple Dragons patrol the main roads and the Tun River but are not typically found in major cities within the Farseas, recognising the swamp denizens' sovereignty and the limit of their power within that natural order.

The Obarskyrs hold alliances on paper with the Farseas denizens, courtesy of the Aris family and their rule over the region. While taxes are collected from Writ holders directly as well as the major civil centers, the swamp denizens largely appreciate a tax-free life — tax collectors having proven far too easily misplaced within the Farseas.

Landscape

The general landscape of the Farseas is difficult if not impossible to travel outside of the available routes, not all of which are roads as most would know them. Being home to all manner of creatures, the Farseas routes may be over land, under water, through brush, or unavailable during particular times of day or year.

The landscape is dotted with ruined fortifications, old abandoned villages, and assorted remnants of skirmishes from decades past, when a bandit king's forces roamed the Tuns. Ancient dwarven infrastructure — carved cliff roads, sealed vaults, and the ruins of Oghrann — persists beneath and alongside the swamp's organic sprawl.

The swamp peoples have large centers in Threetrees, Nykhas Rest, and Elden's Crossing, as well as an innumerable spread of settlements throughout the expanse.

Swamp people have a robust shamanism wherein magic is practiced amid the various beast races as both an arcane skill and a faith-driven power fueled by their pantheon of Swamp Gods.

Politics

Of the various major cities of the swamp peoples, Threetrees acts as the political hub for laws and order as per agreements set forth by Hiren Kropus and Ghorbighor Wartscale in the Peoples Accord, signed in the early centuries of the swamp's recorded history and ratified by the Obarskyr crown and the first council of Threetrees — a body then composed of lizardfolk, bullywug, and humanoid representatives who together affirmed the city as the permanent seat of Farseas governance.

The political landscape of the Farseas is complex at best and downright feral at worst. Three major dynastic interests — Kropus House, House Osrin, and House Foxmantle — have shaped the region's commercial and political fate for over a century, with the Aris family serving as the nominal Cormyrean authority mediating between imperial interests and swamp sovereignty. In recent years, following the deaths of Lucien Kropus and the apparent fall of the Osrin senior line, a power vacuum has drawn new and dangerous actors into the region.

The Suh'Skel — a militant lizardfolk insurrection — overthrew the Threetrees council in approximately 1505 DR, seizing the city's political apparatus and pushing out the old frog and lizardfolk nobility. Their leader, Carrsack the Overfather, now rules as a de facto warlord from within the city, even as rival Mirelords carve out fiefdoms across the wider swamp.

Celebrities

The Farseas has produced no shortage of remarkable individuals, factions, and institutions whose influence extends far beyond the swamp's borders.

Aris Family — The ruling family of the Farseas, nominally sworn to the Cormyrean crown. Jon Aris, once a carpenter, serves as the reluctant king of the region. His brothers Caduca Aris (the diplomat-bruiser) and Dorimo Aris (the warrior monk) form a formidable and fractious triumvirate.

Kropus House — Founded by the human explorer Hiren Kropus, who first recognised the methane potential of the swamp. The house shaped the Farseas' commercial destiny for over a century. Its line now rests on uncertain ground after the death of Lucien Kropus.

House Osrin — Thayan defectors who established a vast soft-power network of temples, sanctuaries, and supply lines that made all of the swamp's early development possible. Followers of Kelemvor. Their founding matriarch Eleanor Osrin remains one of the most consequential figures in Farseas history.

House Foxmantle — Half-elven merchants from Sembia who bankrolled the founding venture. Their fleet dominates grain, textile, and shipping lanes across the Sea of Fallen Stars. Currently represented in the Farseas by the aging and increasingly dangerous Carcenjo Foxmantle II.

Swamp Gods — A pantheon of ten voodoo-inspired deities whose domains span every hour of the swamp day, from Papa Croakus (marshes and guidance) to Gran Sombra (ancestry and the afterlife). Created by clerics of Moradin at the Temple of the Guardians, though this origin is now entirely forgotten.

The Siv — A reclusive order of frog-monks who guard the Spirit Road and the Oghrann Gates. Sometimes called the Illuminati of the swamp. Their influence runs far deeper than most outsiders suspect.

The Black Circle — Zhentarim remnant operating from a supposedly derelict keep. Their tar-ink portal network quietly funded a Manshoon clone's rise in the Black Network resurgence. One of the Farseas' most dangerous open secrets.

Guild of Precision — A dwarf-heavy industrial guild whose methane lamp trade inadvertently spawned the Black Circle's smuggling operation. Their commercial arm in the swamps is run by Tyrdedrek Draco of Fine Machinations.

The Mushroom Queen — The druid Eadaz, amalgamated with the ancient fungal intelligence Migma, now walks the swamp as a singular and terrifying entity seeking entry to the Spirit Road. Widely regarded with a mixture of revulsion and awe.

Flora & Fauna

The Farseas is one of the most biologically dense and dangerous environments in Faerûn's western reaches. Its combination of standing water, methane seeps, ancient elemental contamination, and centuries of magical experimentation has produced an ecosystem unlike any other.

Old One Eye (Stjorrayrm) — A gargantuan crocodile of almost mythic proportions, once the greatest single threat to settlement in the swamp. Killed in a massive battle; its eggs remain a source of tremendous political danger. The Suh'Skel seek the surviving eggs as a kaiju-weapon.

Purple Worms — Enormous burrowing creatures whose activity has destroyed stretches of ancient road, including the cliff road between Threetrees and Slymount. Their tunnels collapse infrastructure and create sinkholes throughout the lower swamp.

Wyverns — Once ridden by the Mir barbarians of the swamp's ancient history. Wyverns have recently begun reappearing in the Farseas after long absence, currently kept underground by Zhentarim skymages and drow in the north Underdark. Their resurgence is considered a dire omen.

Swamp Fungi — The Farseas hosts numerous dangerous fungal species, the most notorious being the mycelium network once associated with Migma. Fungal blooms can appear overnight following elemental distillation accidents, and certain spore clouds are capable of inducing hallucinations, paralysis, or death.

Black Tar (Zeftmensch) — Not a creature but a malevolent, semi-sentient substance formed from the misery and souls of those who died in the swamp. It mutates living things that contact it for prolonged periods and powers the darkest of technologies. Remediated, with great effort, by Hydracephelate dispersal. The swamp's most dangerous resource and its most terrible secret.

Swamp Megafauna — Beyond One Eye, the Farseas hosts giant catfish, territorial wading birds of enormous wingspan, venomous reed serpents capable of swallowing a horse, and the occasional will-o-wisp cluster that navigates unwary travellers into sinkholes.

Culture

The swamp denizens of the Farseas, particularly those in Threetrees, have a unique culture shaped by their swampy surroundings and the intricate interplay of various races and species. In the heart of Threetrees, a remarkable settlement known for its three colossal swamp trees, the population resides on and around these ancient giants. These massive trees provide both shelter and a sense of community, as homes are ingeniously built into the trees themselves.

The Drovers — humanoids who have lived in the swamps for generations — have developed a creole language shared among all swamp denizens, known variously as swamp speech or Drovers Creole. Swamp shamanism, communal festivals honouring the Swamp Gods, and a strong tradition of oral history bind together peoples who might otherwise have little in common.
