Vader Kropus Portrait

Vader Kropus was a half-elven merchant-lord, mage, and pragmatist — the second generation of the Kropus family and the man who transformed his father's methane frontier into an empire. Where Hiren Kropus was the visionary explorer and Eleanor Osrin was the moral anchor, Vader was the consolidator: the one who took what the founding trio built and turned it into something lasting.

His death left a void that no one has yet filled. The civil war now tearing the Farseas apart is, in many ways, a war over who inherits Vader's legacy — and whether anyone can.

Origins

Vader was the son of Hiren Kropus and an elven woman whose identity has been the subject of much speculation but little certainty. His half-elven heritage gave him an extended lifespan that he used to full advantage, outliving many of his human contemporaries and building relationships across generations of Farsea politics.

He grew up in the frontier settlements his father had carved out of the Farsea Swamp, learning the methane trade from the ground up. Where Hiren saw opportunity in the raw wilderness, Vader saw systems: supply chains, trade agreements, political alliances, and the machinery of governance that could turn scattered settlements into a functioning economy.

The Methane Empire

Vader's great achievement was the systematization of the Farsea methane industry. Under his stewardship, the Guild of Precision grew from a loose collection of gas harvesters into a disciplined industrial operation. He established trade routes to Cormyr, negotiated export agreements, and built the infrastructure — both physical and political — that made the Farseas economically relevant to the wider Forgotten Realms.

His approach was fundamentally mercantile. Where others saw the Farseas as a political entity to be governed, Vader saw it as a business to be managed. This pragmatism made him effective but not always beloved. He treated alliances as contracts and loyalty as a currency to be earned through mutual benefit rather than sentiment.

Marriage and Alliance

Vader's marriage to Serena Kropus was as much a political calculation as a personal one. Through it, he cemented the Kropus family's position at the center of Farsea power. Serena brought scholarly discipline and magical knowledge — she compiled the Guardian's Grimoire, a collection of protective wards and alchemical formulas that became one of the family's most valuable assets.

Their partnership was productive but ultimately tragic. Serena died during the birth of their son Lucien Kropus, leaving Vader to raise the next generation alone — a task he approached with the same pragmatism he brought to everything else, and with predictably mixed results.

Political Maneuvering

Vader understood that the Farseas could not survive as an independent entity without allies. He cultivated relationships with Cormyr's merchant guilds, maintained a careful neutrality toward Thay's interests in the region, and built the network of mutual obligations that kept the peace between the great houses.

His relationship with House Osrin was particularly complex. He respected Eleanor Osrin's moral authority and understood that the Osrin family's legitimacy gave the Farsea settlements a veneer of civilization that pure mercantile power could not provide. But he was also willing to make compromises that the Osrins would not, creating tensions that outlived him.

Legacy and the Civil War

The Aris brothers confrontation

Vader's death triggered the crisis that had been building throughout his lifetime. Without his personal authority holding the alliance of houses together, the fault lines he had papered over cracked wide open.

The civil war that followed pitted the great houses against each other — House Kropus fractured between those who wanted to continue Vader's pragmatic approach and those who saw an opportunity to seize more power. House Osrin found itself caught between its moral commitments and the practical realities of survival. House Irungarten maneuvered in the shadows, as it always had.

Vader built an empire on methane and pragmatism. Whether that empire can survive without him remains the central question of the Farseas.
