Erdrick Aris
Erdrick Aris
Erdrick Aris was the father of Jon Aris and the Aris patriarch who died in circumstances that made his son a king. He is a figure defined, in the historical record, by his death and what it set in motion — but behind that narrative is a man who understood the political stakes of the Farseas better than almost anyone of his generation.
The Land Treaty Negotiations
Erdrick was in Elden's Crossing for practical, necessary work: negotiating land treaties in the newest section of the city — the western district, now submerged beneath the swamp — that would establish the legal framework for swamp resource ownership in the era after Vader Kropus.
The central question those treaties addressed was critical: do the Farseas swamplands, in the absence of the Kropus empire's organizing presence, default to the Obarskyrs of Cormyr under extraterritorial law? Erdrick's position was no — that the swamp peoples, the Drovers, and the founding families' heirs held prior and ongoing claims that Cormyrean extraterritorial jurisdiction could not simply absorb.
He was still negotiating when he died. The treaties were unsigned. The records sank with the west end.
The Consequence
Erdrick's death left Jon Aris as king by default — an accession neither man had particularly anticipated. It also left the treaty question unresolved, which became one of the central crises of the No Heroes arc: the submerged records had to be physically exhumed by players to prevent Cormyr from claiming the swamp's resources by default of legal vacuum.
That the records existed at all — that Erdrick had gotten as far as drafting them — was enough, once recovered, to protect the Aris family's claims and give their Kropus allies the legal footing to maintain their alliances despite Cormyrean extraterritorial pressure.
Legacy
Erdrick Aris is remembered as a lawyer-king before his son became a carpenter-king: a man who understood that the real battles of the Farseas were fought in treaty rooms, not just swamps. He was right. He simply did not live to see his work finished.
