Hunters
Hunters
Hunters are a class of mercenary contractor employed by the Purple Dragons — Cormyr's elite military force — to handle threats that fall below the threshold of formal military deployment but above what civic law enforcement can manage.
Role and Status
Hunters operate under a contract-and-sponsor system that grants them priority access to Purple Dragons resources — lodging, supply chains, and material support — in exchange for completing assigned work. They are not soldiers; they are specialists hired at arm's length.
Within the Purple Dragons themselves, Hunters occupy a contested social position. Some commanders regard them as a practical necessity: a flexible tool for dealing with the swamp's endless smaller problems without committing standing troops. Others view them as an insult to military discipline — "the affront to the Purple Dragons" — a suggestion that the regulars cannot handle what the Dragons were trained to handle. A third view is more pragmatic still: those who have been rescued by a Hunter's timely intervention tend to hold more generous opinions.
Operations in the Farseas
In the Farseas context, Hunters frequently work the boundary between Cormyr law and the lawless swamp interior. Their contracts often involve tracking, retrieval, threat suppression, or intelligence work in environments where regular Purple Dragon patrols are impractical. Payment structures vary by contract, with some arrangements providing flat fees and others offering a share of recovered goods or bounties.
The existence of the Hunter program is a quiet acknowledgment that the Tunlands cannot be governed by conventional means.
