Tunlands

Tunlands

Disambiguation. Also known as Farsea Swamps, Tun marshes, and (the) Farseas.

The Tunlands is the broader geographic and political term for the swampland region beyond the Stormhorns, west of Cormyr's civil center. It encompasses both the lower-lying Tun marshes and the higher-altitude Farseas proper, including the sunken ruins of Oghrann and the deep tar seams that have made the region both valuable and dangerous.

Geography

The swamplands are accessible from Cormyr via the High Road or the Tun River, which acts as the primary waterway connecting the interior to the Dragonmere and the Sea of Fallen Stars beyond the Throat. The Tunlands and the Farseas were once regarded as two distinct wetland zones; over generations of expansion the boundary between them has blurred into a single contested expanse.

The swamps eventually meet the foothills of the Stormhorns to the east and north, where the mountain slopes arrest the wetlands' spread.

Peoples

The Tunlands are home to several distinct populations:

  • Lizardpeoples — the dominant beast race of the deeper swamp, politically divided between the Threetrees council faction and the Suh'Skel insurrection
  • Bullywugs — frog peoples with their own religious traditions and political ambitions
  • Fishfolk — river and estuary communities with strong trade ties to the Tun River corridor
  • Drovers — generations of humanoid swamp-dwellers who have developed a shared creole culture and language distinct from both Cormyrean and beast-race traditions

Political Status

The Tunlands nominally fall within Cormyr's territorial claims, but the empire's practical authority diminishes sharply past the frontier towns. The swamp peoples largely do not recognize themselves as Cormyrean subjects, and the question of sovereignty — who owns the resources, who governs the peoples, and who enforces the law — is the central political conflict of the current era.

The death of Lucien Kropus and the resulting civil war have further fragmented what little centralized authority once existed in the region.

Resources

The Tunlands sit atop enormous reserves of methane and The Black Tar, making them the most economically significant contested territory in the western Cormyrean sphere. The Kropus family built their empire on methane extraction; the Irungarten family distills elementals from the deeper tar seams. Control of these resources has driven every major conflict the region has seen.
