Old Cormyr
Old Cormyr
Old Cormyr refers to the earlier territorial and political configuration of Cormyr before the Farseas swamps expanded to their current extent — a period when the region was defined by smaller, contested boundaries and Castle Aris served as a frontier fortification rather than a seat of power.
The Old Boundaries
In this earlier era, the swamplands were considerably smaller. The ruins and earthworks that would later be subsumed by the growing wetlands were then active sites of skirmish and political bargaining. Castle Aris changed hands repeatedly, held by whoever could garrison it with sufficient force and ferocity. It was not a stable inheritance but a prize fought over by successive warlords and minor nobles seeking a foothold on the western frontier.
The Swamp's Expansion
Over generations, the swamps spread outward — northward and westward — until the rising wetlands finally met the foothills of the Stormhorns, where the mountain slopes proved the natural boundary the marshes could not cross. What had been borderland became swampland; what had been contested becomes permanently claimed by water, root, and mud.
Legacy
The ruins of Old Cormyr's frontier era still lie beneath the Farseas in places — partially submerged stonework, old road beds, and the occasional cellar vault that surfaces when the water levels shift. These remnants are a reminder that the swamp's present lawlessness was once the border of a kingdom, and that borders, like the land beneath them, are not permanent.
