Slymount
Slymount
Slymount is the clifftop fortress of Carcenjo Foxmantle II, situated on a rocky cliffside road between Threetrees and Elden's Crossing in the north-western Farseas. It is not a comfortable place. It is an intimidating one.
Geography
The fortress occupies a natural vantage point on the cliff road — an ancient route carved through the rock faces of the Farseas' northern margins by dwarves who worked the region centuries ago. The road itself was designed to allow safe passage while avoiding the worst of the swamp's natural dangers: the standing water, the territorial megafauna, the black tar seeps that make lowland travel hazardous. In recent years, however, the path between Threetrees and Slymount has fallen to ruin due to purple worm activity chewing through the road's foundations. What remains is treacherous but mostly intact.
The cliff road's dwarven origin connects it to a broader underground infrastructure — the same ancient vaults and cut galleries that run through the Storm Horns and beneath the Farseas' northern reaches. Slymount's lower levels may extend into this older network, though Carcenjo II has never publicised whatever he has found beneath his fortress.
History and Use
Slymount was acquired and fortified by House Foxmantle during the family's more active period of Farseas involvement — a time when having a secure waypoint between Threetrees and the eastern approaches was commercially valuable. As the Foxmantles' direct involvement in the swamps waned, Slymount became less a commercial outpost and more a private bolt-hole: remote, defensible, and far enough from Cormyrean oversight to be useful for the kind of business that doesn't benefit from witnesses.
Under Carcenjo Foxmantle II, it has become operational in a darker sense. The most recent and well-documented use of Slymount involved the imprisonment and torture of Mayor Wreth of Elden's Crossing. Carcenjo wanted Wreth to sign documents authorising Foxmantle methane claims over Elden's Crossing's facilities — claims prohibited by Cormyrean law but commercially essential to Carcenjo's ambitions. Wreth refused. Carcenjo held him in Slymount's lower rooms and applied pressure.
A group of adventurers arrived via a writ provided by Carcenjo himself — who had tried to recruit them as swamp operatives — found Wreth, and freed him. Carcenjo is now their enemy.
Current Status
Slymount is still Carcenjo's property. The fortress is staffed with loyal Foxmantle retainers and whatever hired muscle Carcenjo's dwindling resources can sustain. Mayor Wreth is no longer there.
The writ that the adventurers carry technically authorises their access to Slymount — a detail that may or may not protect them if they return.
