The Draco Family

The Draco family is a network of travelers, merchants, and thrill-seekers based in Calimshan and Kara-Tur, operating across a vast geographical range that has historically included the Farseas. They are present, curious, commercially active, and largely unaware of the most significant fact about their lineage: the lord of the house is a black dragon, and all family members are, in some sense, his sired offspring.

The joke, as those few who do know describe it, is not only that it's a bit on the nose — it's that not even the Dracos themselves are aware of who their patron really is.

Character

The Dracos are travellers by temperament and profession. Their network spans the Sea of Fallen Stars and beyond, connecting Calimshan's commercial hub with the distant provinces of Kara-Tur through a combination of conventional transport and magical conveyance — including magic carpet routes between the Aris house in the Farseas and the Chu'yuan province of Kara-Tur, which is how Dorimo Aris first made the journey west to join his half-brothers.

They are not warriors, primarily, though the circumstances of long-range travel in a dangerous world mean they are rarely helpless. They are connectors, fixers, and the kind of people who always seem to know someone wherever they go.

The Black Dragon Patron

The lord of the Draco house is a black dragon — a fact obscured by whatever charm, illusion, or simple improbability keeps the truth from those closest to it. The family members do not know. The people who do business with them generally do not know. The joke is theoretical, enjoyed by a very small number of people with the full picture.

The practical implication of this lineage is that Draco family members are, by nature, more capable than they appear — infused, however unknowingly, with the heritage of one of Faerûn's most dangerous and magically potent creatures.

Farseas Involvement

The Dracos were formerly active in the Farseas in a formal capacity, as part of the commercial networks that supported the Aris family and the broader swamp enterprise. They no longer visit in any formal capacity. The reason is straightforward: wyverns have recently begun reappearing in the Farseas swamps after long absence, currently kept underground by Zhentarim skymages and drow. Wyverns and Dracos have a complicated relationship, and the family has chosen discretion.

Tyrdedrek Draco

The most recent Draco active in the Farseas is Tyrdedrek Draco, who runs Fine Machinations — a Guild of Precision-backed venture providing mobile mechanical and engineering services for industrial and steamy equipment throughout the swamps. Tyrdedrek acts as the Guild's field representative, maintaining the infrastructure that keeps the methane trade's machinery functional in the Farseas' corrosive and tar-heavy environment.

He is the exception to the family's current withdrawal from Farseas involvement — present, useful, and conspicuously not asking about the wyverns.
