Karsath
Karsath
Karsath is a fire daemon — a being of heat, spite, and ancient grudges — who served as one of the most personal antagonists in Eleanor Osrin's long and tragic history. He is not the same being as Karzath (the despot daemon who killed Etterych Osrin); they share a similar name but are entirely distinct entities with no confirmed connection.
History with Eleanor Osrin
The full history of Karsath's relationship with Eleanor predates the founding of the Farseas and is rooted in the arcane politics of Thay. Karsath is described as a "rebellious fire daemon" and Eleanor's old nemesis — suggesting a history of conflict or failed alliance that preceded the specific betrayal for which he is best known.
When Eleanor sought restoration of her human form — having been cursed by Thay into the form of a silver goose — she approached Karsath for assistance. He betrayed her. The nature of that betrayal resulted in Eleanor sacrificing herself to imprison both herself and Karsath within the Osrin fire-elemental reactor — a defunct fire-elemental reactor at the bottom of the old Osrin laboratory — sealing them both within it.
Release and Defeat
Karsath remained imprisoned in the reactor for decades, alongside Eleanor's semi-preserved consciousness. During the climax of the The Iron Garden arc, the pump dispersion lines were crossed, which activated the reactor — releasing both Eleanor and Karsath. Karsath emerged mocking Eleanor's grief and prepared for battle.
He was ultimately trapped in a crystal capsule to power the Hydracephelate dispersion system — a poetically appropriate fate for a fire daemon: converted into energy, contained, and made useful against his will.
His last words cursed the name of Dondyogo — Lord of Ember Law and Sovereign of the Cindertide Court, a Fire King of the Elemental Plane of Fire — who disavowed Karsath entirely: "Let the rogue ember be snuffed. He was given law. He chose chaos. That is all."
Note on Names
The similarity between "Karsath" (this fire daemon) and "Karzath" (the despot daemon who assassinated Etterych Osrin) has caused confusion in historical records. They are not the same entity. Karsath is a fire daemon; Karzath is a despot daemon. The coincidence of similar names in the same family's history is one of those small cruelties that makes reconstructing Osrin history genuinely difficult.
