Eleanor Osrin (née unknown) was a human woman from Thay and one of the three founding figures — alongside Hiren Kropus and Carcenjo Foxmantle I — who transformed the lawless Farsea Swamps into a functioning commercial and civic enterprise. She is remembered as the moral backbone of the founding generation: haunted, principled, and tireless in her care for others. Without her network of sanctuaries and supply lines, neither methane drilling nor lasting settlement in the Farseas would have been possible.

Origins and Flight from Thay

Eleanor was educated in Thay, where she and her husband Etterych Osrin belonged to a scholarly society known as "the Silver Minds" — Thayan researchers working in elemental distillation, arcane cartography, and the properties of unusual substances. Their lives were upended when Etterych was assassinated by Karzath, a powerful despot daemon jointly summoned and controlled by two rival Thayan families: the Bacharuss Family and the Grakoss Family, acting in a political power struggle Eleanor had no part in.

Etterych's murder left Eleanor shattered. She gathered what she could carry — research, blueprints, stolen knowledge, and a grief that would never fully leave her — and fled Thay, determined to travel as far from her former life as the roads would take her. She eventually settled in Suzail long enough to meet a restless human explorer named Hiren Kropus.

Meeting Hiren and the Founding

Eleanor encountered Hiren Kropus in Cormyr: a tall, glib-tongued man with eyes always on the horizon and a head full of schemes about the Farsea Swamps. She was haunted and emotionally unavailable; he was sometimes petulant and prone to optimism without grounding. They were a perfect counterbalance.

Eleanor joined Hiren's early explorations not as a financier — that role fell to Carcenjo Foxmantle I — but as a stabilising presence and the voice of reason when Hiren's enthusiasm outpaced practical reality. Within a year, the three founding partners had done what no one had managed before: made use of the Farsea Swamp for something other than banditry, hiding, or dying in.

The Osrin Sanctuary Network

Eleanor's greatest contribution to the Farseas was not alchemical or political, but human. Drawing on her Thayan background in logistics and supply, and motivated by grief that expressed itself as compulsive generosity, she built a network of way-stations, clinics, temples, and food distribution points across the Farsea expanse.

This soft-power network served several purposes simultaneously: it fed and sheltered swamp denizens who had known nothing but banditry and survival; it earned the Osrin name a reputation for trustworthiness among peoples who had every reason to distrust outsiders; and it provided Hiren and later Vader Kropus with the goodwill necessary to negotiate drilling access deeper into the swamps without constant bloodshed.

Eleanor's network enabled the founding of Nykhas Rest, the first major city in the Farseas, and later contributed to Threetrees' growth into the regional capital. Her temples and sanctuaries still stand in both cities today, though the organisation that once staffed them is a shadow of what it was fifty years ago.

The Osrin Heraldry: The Silver Goose

The House Osrin family crest bears a silver goose on a field of midnight blue. In the founding era, this was a mark of pride — an image the Osrins had chosen to represent their house.

The Thayans remembered it.

Thayan Persecution and the Curse

The Thayans did not forget Eleanor's defection. Her flight with their research made her a target for decades. Thayan agents infiltrated the Farseas, stole research, and ultimately deployed a weapon against Eleanor that was designed to be more than punishment — it was designed to be humiliation.

The curse transformed Eleanor into a silver goose.

The choice was not arbitrary. The Thayans knew the Osrin family crest. They chose the silver goose specifically — to strip Eleanor of her humanity and replace it with her own family's heraldic animal. Every moment of Eleanor's cursed existence was a mockery of the house she had built, a reminder that the Osrins' most cherished symbols could be turned against them. The cruelty had precision.

Eleanor and her son Warwick Osrin created The Carnival — a mobile semi-planar vessel masquerading as a traveling carnival, half in the Material Plane and half in the Ethereal — as an Osrin redoubt during these desperate years.

Eleanor also established a portal network between the Farseas and Cormyr, originally because Carcenjo Foxmantle I refused to return to the swamps after the founding and the partners needed a way to communicate. These portals became enduring Osrin infrastructure — and, in later generations, a tool for the Osrins' more troubling political manoeuvres in Cormyrean courts.

Eleanor's attempts to reverse the goose curse led her to negotiate with Karsath, a rebellious fire daemon. The deal ended in betrayal. Eleanor sacrificed herself to imprison both herself and Karsath within the Osrin fire-elemental reactor, ensuring the daemon could not harm anyone else — at the cost of her own restoration.

Her current state is neither death nor life. She flickers between human and avian forms, semi-restored, still reaching toward her son Warwick — who cannot, in his current broken state, reach back.

Legacy

Eleanor Osrin is the unseen foundation beneath the Farseas as it exists today. The roads she provisioned, the temples she built, the trust she cultivated — these were the conditions that made everything else possible. That the knowledge of her contribution has largely faded would not have surprised her. She built for others, not for monuments.
