Karzath

Karzath is a powerful despot daemon — a being of malice and dominion from the lower planes — who played a pivotal role in setting the entire history of the Farseas in motion, despite having no direct involvement in the swamp itself.

The Assassination of Etterych Osrin

Karzath was jointly summoned and controlled by the Bacharuss Family and the Grakoss Family — two rival-yet-allied Thayan clans who sought to eliminate Etterych Osrin, husband of Eleanor Osrin. Both families were power brokers within Thay's scholarly and political circles. Whether Etterych had crossed their interests in elemental distillation research, threatened their political position, or simply represented an obstacle in some larger Thayan intrigue, the two families weaponised Karzath as their instrument of assassination.

Etterych Osrin was killed in Thay. The daemon's role was fulfilled, and Karzath was — presumably — dismissed or returned to whatever lower plane contained him.

The Consequences

What the Bacharuss and Grakoss families almost certainly did not anticipate was the scale of consequence. Eleanor Osrin, devastated and haunted by her husband's murder, fled Thay entirely — traveling as far as possible until she reached Cormyr, where she met Hiren Kropus. Within a generation, the founding trio of Hiren, Eleanor, and Carcenjo Foxmantle I had transformed an untamed swamp into the most contested resource region in the western Forgotten Realms.

Karzath assassinated one man. The ripple of that single act built cities.

Karzath and Karsath: A Critical Distinction

Karzath should not be confused with Karsath — a fire daemon and entirely separate entity who later became Eleanor's personal nemesis. Karsath betrayed Eleanor when she sought restoration of her form, and was imprisoned alongside her in the Osrin Reactor. The two share a superficially similar name but are distinct beings with no confirmed connection to one another:

Karsath — fire daemon; betrayed Eleanor Osrin; imprisoned in the Osrin reactor; ultimately trapped in a crystal capsule to power the Hydracephelate dispersion system

Both names appear in Farseas historical records, and confusion between the two has occasionally produced misattributed histories. The distinction matters: Karzath is a distant political weapon whose consequences echo forward through history; Karsath is a personal betrayal that cost Eleanor everything.
