The Iron Garden
The Iron Garden
The Iron Garden is the third seasonal arc of the The Farsea Chronicles campaign, focused on the Irungarten family and their industrialized exploitation of the Farseas swamp's magical and divine resources. The season is defined by a distinctive aesthetic: body horror, dieselpunk engineering, cybernetic augmentation, and the horror of discovering what happens when ancient divine infrastructure gets industrialized.
Setting and Aesthetic
Where earlier seasons operated in the registers of political intrigue and swamp survival, the Iron Garden introduces a third genre: industrial body horror. The Irungarten family — high elves descended from House Tel'Adan, now operating as "Kroonenberg style" industrialists in black leather and mechanical augments — represent a vision of the future that the swamp peoples find profoundly threatening.
Wyrmhall, their fortress, sits atop the West Gate to Oghrann and is surrounded by the The Black Fields — a landscape visibly mutated by elemental distillation runoff. The city itself is suspended in a superstructure of steel, wood, and stone; gothic industrial architecture built into the swamp's bones.
Plot Summary
The season opens with an escort mission: players must bring Rutherford Farfetcher — the dwarven alchemist who designed the pump systems — safely to Silverpool to repair the The Farfetcher Pumps. Three major encounter arcs follow:
- The Thayan Ambush at the Royal Meeting Hall — Jon Aris and his family are present; the players are introduced to the political stakes.
- The Demonic Swarm at Silverpool's Edge — the environmental cost of the Black Tar crisis made manifest.
- The Migma Puzzle-Boss at the Farfetcher Hole — Migma, the mycelial entity that evolved from the distributed consciousness of Sigma Irungarten, requires puzzle-solving rather than brute force.
Climax
The season climaxes in the Irungarten control room: a six-wire puzzle that, when solved (or solved wrongly), releases Eleanor Osrin and Karsath from the Osrin fire-elemental reactor where they have been imprisoned for decades. Warwick Osrin manifests. Tycho Irungarten arrives alongside Sigma Irungarten.
An etheric bomb is detonated, wounding the Swamp Gods who had been attempting to use a transmission spire to ascend to major godhood.
Outcomes:
- The Black Tar is neutralized through Hydracephelate dispersal
- Papa Croakus is captured by Tycho Irungarten
- The Swamp Pantheon is scattered and diminished
- Eadaz amalgamates with Migma, becoming the Mushroom Queen
Legacy
The Iron Garden's events are the pivot point of the entire campaign. Before it: the Farseas has problems. After it: the Farseas is in crisis. The gods are wounded. The head of the swamp pantheon is a hostage. The most dangerous druid in the region has fused with a mycelial intelligence and is seeking to enter the The Spirit Road. The civil war that will define No Heroes is now inevitable.
