Nykhas Rest

Nykhas Rest

Nykhas Rest is the oldest major city in the Farseas — the first permanent settlement established in the deeper swamps during the founding era, built through the combined efforts of Hiren Kropus's commercial drive, Eleanor Osrin's sanctuary network, and Carcenjo Foxmantle I's financial backing.

History

Before the founding trio arrived in the Farseas, the deeper swamp had no permanent human settlements of any significance. It was the domain of beast-race peoples — lizardfolk, bullywugs, fishfolk — and of the drovers who moved through the margins, and of bandits and outlaws who used the swamp's impenetrability as cover. Hiren Kropus changed the equation when he identified the methane potential of the swamp's peat beds and marsh vents, and the infrastructure that followed required somewhere for workers, merchants, and the various peoples drawn by opportunity to live.

Eleanor Osrin chose the site of Nykhas Rest with her characteristic pragmatism: it was elevated enough to be defensible, accessible enough to be commercially viable, and positioned along one of the swamp's natural travel routes. Her sanctuary network provided the social infrastructure — food, shelter, temples, and basic medical care — that made it possible for people to stay.

Nykhas Rest was founded before Threetrees, and for a generation it was the political and commercial heart of the Farseas. The first Peoples Accord negotiations drew on infrastructure established here.

Current State

Nykhas Rest has since been superseded by Threetrees as the Farseas' political capital — the larger and more chaotic city that grew up around the three great swamp trees in the central expanse. Nykhas Rest remains a significant city in its own right, known as a more ordered and commercially focused settlement, with better access to the Tun River trade routes.

Eleanor Osrin's original sanctuary buildings still stand in Nykhas Rest. Temples, way-stations, and distribution points bearing the Osrin architectural style — practical, modest, built for use — are embedded in the city's older quarters. The organisation that once staffed them has largely faded, but the buildings endure.

The information broker Ssivrix operates The Drunken Dragon bar in Nykhas Rest — a reliable point of contact for intelligence on swamp affairs. Ssivrix is a half-lizard with expert knowledge and a carefully maintained neutrality.

Geography

Nykhas Rest sits on a section of the Farseas that provides reasonable access to the Tun River and thus to the broader Cormyrean trade network. The city is accessible by water and by several of the Farseas' better-maintained roads. It is not as large or as dense as Threetrees, but it is more navigable — which, in the swamps, is a significant advantage.
