Rachel Foxmantle

Rachel Foxmantle

Rachel Foxmantle was the sister of Carcenjo Foxmantle II, the concubine of Yorick Osrin, and the mother of Aromarr Osrin. She is remembered for the manner of her death — quiet, deliberate, and entirely on her own terms — and for what that death revealed about the cost of her brother's revenge.

Life

Rachel lived between two worlds: the House Foxmantle merchant empire, with its stylized fox-head heraldry and its fleets crossing the Sea of Fallen Stars, and the quieter, more scholarly world of the House Osrin into which her relationship with Yorick drew her. She was a woman of considerable intelligence and independent will — qualities her brother Carcenjo valued in the abstract and resented in practice.

Her relationship with Yorick Osrin was genuine: not a political arrangement but a bond between two people caught in the machinery of their families' long histories. Their son Aromarr Osrin was born into that deliberate love. Carcenjo Foxmantle II viewed the relationship as defilement — a characterisation that reveals more about him than about either Rachel or Yorick.

Death

When Carcenjo Foxmantle II murdered Yorick Osrin (or believed he had) and Aromarr Osrin, he went to Rachel. The conversation that followed is one of the Farseas' quiet tragedies:

She, calmly: "They were my family."

Him, sputtering: "He called you his whore! His son a bastardo!"

She, calmly: "You. This was my life. I'm not yours. I'm not anybody's."

Him, surprised: "Rachael what are yo— don't fuck abou— NO no nooonononononono!"

She walked herself out a tower window.

Her final words — I'm not yours. I'm not anybody's — are the clearest statement of who Rachel Foxmantle was. She was not property. She was not an extension of her brother's honour. She was a person who had chosen her own family, and when that family was destroyed, she chose her own end.

Legacy

Rachel Foxmantle's death links the Osrin and Foxmantle families at their most human level. She appears in no formal treaties or political records. But in the story of why Carcenjo Foxmantle II became the bitter, heirless old man who tortures mayors in cliff fortresses and fixates on methane claims no law will grant him — she is the explanation.

Her son Aromarr Osrin was eventually resurrected from the The Spirit Road by adventurers and reunited with his father Yorick Osrin, who had in fact survived Carcenjo's assassination attempt. Rachel never knew. Yorick lives; Aromarr lives; the family she called her own endures in the Underdark without her.
