Soul Wells

Soul Wells

Soul Wells are concentrations of The Black Tar's generative force embedded in the landscape of the Farseas — specifically in The Black Fields surrounding Wyrmhall — where the accumulated suffering and death of the swamp's history rises most strongly to the surface.

Nature

A Soul Well is not a geological feature but a spiritual one: a place where the psychic residue of violent death, suffering, and unresolved grief has pooled over centuries into something with mass and weight. The phenomenon is related to the Black Tar's semi-sentient nature — the Tar is fed by this residue; the Soul Wells are where the feeding is most concentrated.

Visually, Soul Wells manifest as patches of ground where the swamp's normal ecological rules seem suspended. Vegetation grows wrong. Animals avoid the area. The air has a quality that sensitive individuals describe as "heavy" or "old grief given form."

Strategic Significance

Soul Wells feed the Black Tar even when the The Farfetcher Pumps are operational and dispersing Hydracephelate through the system. This means that the Black Tar crisis, while suppressed in the current era, cannot be permanently resolved without addressing the Soul Wells themselves.

The Irungarten family is aware of the Soul Wells and has incorporated their locations into the management of their battery technology operations. Whether they have any method for harvesting or neutralizing Soul Well energy is among their more closely held secrets.

Connection to Spirit Road

There is a theoretical (and possibly literal) connection between Soul Wells and the The Spirit Road — both involve the spiritual residue of the dead, though the Spirit Road processes that residue into something structured and navigable while Soul Wells leave it raw and malevolent. Whether this connection could be exploited is a question for arcane researchers.
