The Black Fields

The Black Fields

The Black Fields are a region of visibly mutated landscape surrounding Wyrmhall (also known as Ironclaw), the fortress of the Irungarten family in the western Farseas. The mutation is a direct byproduct of the Irungarten family's elemental distillation process — decades of Hydracephelate runoff, elemental residue, and magical industrial discharge have transformed the surrounding environment into something distinctly non-native.

Appearance

The Black Fields are immediately identifiable: the soil shifts between dark greys and blacks with patches of iridescent discoloration where elemental residue has pooled. Plant life in the region has adapted in unsettling ways — some species grow in colors they should not be capable of, others have developed defensive adaptations that seem to incorporate metallic or crystalline structures into their biology. The atmospheric distortions common near heavy Hydracephelate concentrations give the area a slightly luminescent quality at night.

Soul Wells

Embedded in the Black Fields are Soul Wells — concentrations of The Black Tar's generative force where the suffering embedded in the swamp's history rises most strongly. The Soul Wells feed the Black Tar's semi-sentient malevolence; they were not created by the Irungartens but have been incorporated into their operational understanding of the region.

Strategic Value

The Black Fields are the primary production site for Hydracephelate in the Farseas. The Irungarten process accelerates natural elemental death through their grey-silver brine battery technology, generating Hydracephelate as a harvestable byproduct. This makes the Black Fields the single most industrially valuable location in the western swamp — and the reason Tycho Irungarten guards Wyrmhall with the resources of a small military.
