The Farfetcher Pumps

The Farfetcher Pumps are the network of alchemical machinery designed and built by Rutherford Farfetcher that form the industrial backbone of the Farseas' resource economy. They separate tar from water through distillation, channel methane gas for collection and distribution, and — critically — disperse Hydracephelate through the swamp's waterways as a neutralizing agent against the The Black Tar.

Function

The pumps operate by drawing swamp water and tar through a staged distillation process. In doing so, they:

Separate usable methane gas for collection by the Guild of Precision and their distribution network
Capture Black Tar and prevent it from spreading through the active waterways
Produce Hydracephelate as a filterable byproduct of the process — the substance that keeps the tar from accumulating

Without the pumps running, Hydracephelate stops flowing. The tar rises. The swamp's waterways become increasingly hostile. This is exactly what Thayan agents caused when they sabotaged the system.

The Sabotage

Thayan agents embedded among the Drovers of Silverpool undermined the pumps specifically to harvest the Hydracephelate that the running system would normally disperse — allowing it to accumulate in the filters where it could be stolen. The sabotage was calculated and subtle: the pumps failed gradually, the tar rose slowly, and by the time the crisis was visible, the Thayans had already taken what they came for.

Repair

Rutherford Farfetcher was the only person with the expertise to repair the pump network properly. The Season 3 escort arc centered on getting him safely to Silverpool through a region in crisis. The repair required hands-on work with specialized tools across multiple valves.

After repair, the dispersal system was rewired to allow Hydracephelate to flow through the network and cleanse the accumulated Black Tar — resolving the crisis that had been building since the sabotage.
