The Carnival
The Carnival
The Carnival is a mobile semi-planar construction created by House Osrin in approximately 1400–1430 DR as an escape vessel during their flight from Thay. It masquerades as a traveling carnival — complete with rides, performers, and festive atmosphere that draws people closer — while existing simultaneously half in the Material Plane and half in the Ethereal or Fey planes.
Purpose
The Carnival was engineered for several specific functions:
- Smuggle people, knowledge, and forbidden items through regions where the Osrins were being hunted by Thayan agents
- Hide Eleanor Osrin's existence during the period of her silver goose curse
- Shield Silverpool's tech secrets from Thayan recovery operations
- Provide a mobile base that could slip between planes when cornered
It relies on ink magic, Feywild pacts, and Osrin alchemy to maintain its dual-planar existence.
Eleanor, the Curse, and the Silver Goose
The Carnival was created in direct response to Thay's curse on Eleanor Osrin — the transformation that forced her into the form of a silver goose as punishment for her defection and the knowledge she carried out of Thay. The silver goose became the House Osrin, a deliberate reclamation of what was meant as a mark of humiliation.
Trapped in avian form, Eleanor eventually sought to reverse the curse through a desperate bargain with Karsath, a fire daemon and old nemesis. Karsath betrayed her. Eleanor sacrificed herself to imprison both of them within the Osrin Reactor beneath the old Osrin laboratory. Her current state is semi-restored: she emerges flickering between human and avian features, and tragically attempts to reach her son Warwick Osrin.
The Carnival outlasted its original purpose. Whether she, in whatever form, retains any connection to it remains unknown.
Warwick Osrin and the Restoration
One of Warwick Osrin's secondary goals — alongside his vendetta against the Irungartens, Foxmantles, and Thayans — is to restore the Carnival and to resurrect Eleanor from her silver goose imprisonment. The Carnival represents not just an Osrin institution but the physical vessel of everything his mother built and suffered for. Warwick's shattered, tar-bound existence makes this goal both desperate and uncertain: a spectral knight haunting Silverpool's underground is not well-positioned for delicate magical restoration work.
Whether the Carnival can be restored, and whether Eleanor can be freed from the reactor, are questions that remain open.
Current Status
Collapsed carnival tunnels still exist beneath Silverpool, with faded banners, rusted rides, and distorted music boxes that occasionally play of their own accord. A half-submerged Mirror Tent acts as a portal locus — unstable but theoretically restorable.
After the Osrin family's string of disasters — Warwick's soul-splintering, Yorick's apparent assassination, Eleanor's imprisonment — the question of who runs the Carnival, if anyone, remains unanswered. There may be surviving Osrin descendants or associates aboard, continuing operations in some residual form. Or it may be running on enchantment alone: an institution that has outlasted those who built it.
