Manshoon
Manshoon

The Manshoon active in the Farseas is not the original Manshoon of history but one of his many clones — a deliberate survival mechanism the original Manshoon employed across the centuries, seeding copies of his consciousness throughout the Realms against the eventuality of his death. This particular clone has risen to quiet prominence by running The Black Circle from behind the scenes.
The Clone's Rise
The Black Circle's success — specifically their invention and commercialization of tar-ink portals, which draw on the Farseas' unique swamp-tar substrates to create low-cost transit routes — generated wealth on a scale that allowed this clone to fund a resurgence of the Black Network (the Zhentarim) in the region. Portal revenue became political capital, and political capital became renewed factional power.
The Manshoon clone operates with the careful patience of someone who has lived multiple lifetimes. He does not seek the spotlight. His keep is known as "allegedly derelict" — a Zhentarim fortress on a nearby hill, supposedly abandoned since the network's fall, quietly active behind its crumbling facade.
Courting Jon Aris
In approximately 1506–1507 DR, Manshoon made his most significant overt move: he introduced himself to Jon Aris, king of the Farseas in name if not in full practice, through agents led by Leopold Le'claw — a Tabaxi operative who serves as the Black Circle's primary envoy.
Manshoon offers Jon support: resources, intelligence, the Black Circle's portal network, and the implicit weight of Zhentarim muscle. Jon is a carpenter-turned-reluctant-king, caught between a civil war he didn't start and brothers who see his weaknesses clearly. Manshoon's offer is seductive in a way that pragmatic men find dangerous.
Caduca Aris and Dorimo Aris are alarmed.
Underdark Connections
The drow of Sschindylryn employ the Zhentarim, funneling resources to Manshoon's network. The Underdark connection gives the clone access to drow intelligence networks, stone giant labor, and the wyverns kept underground by Zhentarim skymages and drow in the north Underdark.
This places Manshoon's intelligence apparatus in the same underground geography as Shiawass and Yorick Osrin, who are hiding in Sschindylryn. Whether Manshoon is aware of Yorick's survival — and what he might do with that knowledge — remains an open question with significant political implications.
Black Circle Portal Technology
The tar-ink portals that funded Manshoon's rise are drawn by writing destination coordinates and longevity in a patterned inscription on a wall. They have a chaotic tie to the swamps: in deep tar zones, they become unstable, off-target, and dangerous — not unreliable enough to be useless, but enough to require skill and care. The Guild of Precision's expensive official transport routes made these portals economically irresistible despite their risks.
