The Black Circle
The Black Circle
The Black Circle is the operating name for the remnant of the Black Network — the Zhentarim — that continues to function in the Farseas region under the quiet direction of a Manshoon clone. Once a derelict keep and a fading memory, the Black Circle has reinvented itself as the Farseas' most sophisticated and profitable portal network operation, and in doing so has funded the Zhentarim resurgence from within.
History
The Zhentarim maintained a presence in the Farseas during the height of the Black Network's power. Their fortress — a substantial keep on a hill near the swamp's northern margin — was abandoned, or appeared to be, when the network fell. It sat "allegedly derelict" for years, long enough that most people stopped paying attention to it.
The people inside never stopped paying attention.
The Tar-Ink Portal Network
The Black Circle's genius was recognising what the Farseas' methane and tar infrastructure had inadvertently created: a substance — black tar — that could be refined into portal ink. Tar-ink portals are drawn by inscribing destination coordinates and longevity instructions in a patterned formula on a wall surface. The resulting portal connects two points with reliability and speed that the conventional methods of magical transport cannot match at comparable cost.
The Circle hired local specialists to develop and refine the technique, established a network of inscribed portal points across the Farseas and into Cormyr, and began charging for access. The fees were modest at first. The volume was not. As the methane trade created demand for fast, reliable movement of goods, people, and money, the tar-ink portal network became the arterial infrastructure of the Farseas' underground economy.
One important limitation: tar-based portals have a chaotic connection to the swamp's deeper energies. In zones of heavy black tar concentration, the portals become unstable — still functional, but off-target and unpredictable. The Circle knows this and routes accordingly, but it means the deepest and most magically contaminated swamp areas remain effectively inaccessible to the portal network.
The cost of conventional magical transport had previously been so high that it spawned a robust smuggling industry. The Black Circle absorbed that industry.
The Manshoon Clone
The extraordinary revenue generated by the tar-ink portal network funded something the Black Circle's founders may not have anticipated when they began: the quiet rise of a Manshoon clone who had been running the Circle's operations. This clone used the Circle's resources and the Zhentarim's reviving networks to position himself as a genuine power in the reconstituted Black Network.
The Manshoon clone has recently made contact with Jon Aris, the reluctant king of the Farseas, via agents led by Leopold Le'claw, a Tabaxi operative. He promises Jon support — the kind of support that Jon's brothers Caduca Aris and Dorimo Aris view with considerable alarm.
The drow of Sschindylryn also employ Zhentarim operatives, providing the Manshoon clone with additional resources and reach beyond the Farseas' surface operations.
The Keep
The Black Circle's keep on the hill is no longer derelict in any meaningful sense, though it maintains the appearance of abandonment as a matter of operational security. The interior has been significantly modified to support portal operations. Inkweavers — the specialists responsible for inscribing and maintaining the tar-ink portals — operate from within.
Relationship to Other Factions
- House Foxmantle: Commercial relationship; the Foxmantles use Circle portals for confidential transport, including the portal in Carcenjo Foxmantle II's office that the adventurers stumbled through.
- House Osrin: The Circle's inkweaving practices have an inadvertent stabilising effect on Warwick Osrin's semi-spectral form near Silverpool, where the tar-portal energies and Warwick's condition interact.
- Thayans: The Circle cannot penetrate deep tar zones; the Thayans can. The Circle fears Thayan dominance and regards them as a threat to their portal monopoly.
- Jon Aris: The Manshoon clone is actively courting Jon as a political ally.
