The Siv
The Siv
The Siv are an ancient, cerebral amphibious race of frog-headed monastic guardians native to the sunken temple ruins of the Farseas, the Marsh of Chelimber, and the Vast Swamp. Tall and spindly in build yet topping out at only four feet tall, the Siv are notoriously brainy, secretive, and calculating. In the current era, they largely keep to themselves in the deep, dark depths of Sschindylryn in the Underdark, from where the Siv lord Shiawass directs their remaining surface wardens who guard The Spirit Road and collect the ancient Spirit Coins.
Physical Characteristics & Monastic Discipline
The Siv are tall, spindly frogs topping out at 4 feet tall. Though small in absolute stature compared to surface humans or half-orcs, their proportions are unmistakably lean, angular, and elongated — long, sinewy batrachian limbs, narrow torsos, and broad, expressive frog heads with skin ranging from pale marsh-green and reed-ochre to deep nocturnal blue.
Above all else, the Siv are brainy. Where other swamp-dwelling peoples such as bullywugs or lizardfolk rely on brute amphibious brawn or territorial aggression, the Siv are cerebral scholars, esoteric archivists, and patient strategists. They view the surface world through the lens of centuries-long monastic discipline, preferring quiet observation, geometric precision, and manipulation from the shadows over open confrontation.
- Stature & Build: Tall, spindly frog-humanoids topping out at 4 feet in height, with elongated limbs and light, agile frames built for vaulting across roots, temple stone, and marsh reed-beds.
- Cerebral Temperament: Exceptionally brainy, analytical, and insular; trained in monastic cloisters that prize memory, lore-keeping, and tactical foresight.
- Water Walking & Cold Mastery: Adapted to frigid fens and subterranean cisterns, the Siv possess natural resistance to cold and can stride across calm swamp water without breaking the surface tension.
- Monastic Combat: When forced to fight in defense of their shrines, Siv monks strike in synchronous formations using sianghams, weighted nets, and slings to entangle and Exhaust trespassers before closing in.
Deep in the Dark of Sschindylryn
These days, the Siv mostly keep to themselves in the deep, dark depths of Sschindylryn — the subterranean drow city in the northern Underdark beneath the Farseas. Weary of the escalating surface wars between Cormyr, Thay, and the noble houses of the marsh, the bulk of the Siv's scholarly leadership has withdrawn into the lightless caverns below.
From the deep dark of Sschindylryn, the senior Siv lord Shiawass maintains an insular enclave that coordinates the order's surface temple gates from afar. Within these protected subterranean quarters, Shiawass and the Siv have also quietly harbored the surviving Yorick Osrin (after Carcenjo Foxmantle II's assassination attempt) as well as his resurrected son Aromarr Osrin following Aromarr's return from The Spirit Road.
Guardians of the Spirit Road
Among the Siv's oldest sacred duties is the stewardship of The Spirit Road — the etheric pocket dimension where the Swamp Gods reside, accessed via three ancient Gates in the ruins of Oghrann: Osrinro, Osrinray, and Ironclaw. Small cadres of Siv temple wardens still watch over these sunken thresholds, collecting the Spirit Coins toll stamped in the ancient covenant between House Osrin and the Swamp Pantheon.
Access to the Spirit Road requires a specific sacred hand gesture, a Channel Divinity, and a Spirit Coin offering. The Siv remain implacably opposed to the Church of the Silverwing Serpent — Dambastra's earthly cult led by Draxxus — which has sought to subvert Siv temple authority and hijack spiritual travel across the marshes.
