Spirit Road
The Spirit Road
The Spirit Road is an ethereal travel network threaded through and beneath the Farseas, serving simultaneously as a transit system, a spiritual realm, and a liminal space where the living can encounter — and negotiate with — the dead. It is guarded by the Siv and structured around three gates in the ruins of Oghrann.
Access
Entry to the Spirit Road requires three things acting in concert:
- A specific hand gesture known to initiates of the Siv and certain swamp-knowledgeable individuals
- A Channel Divinity — divine power sufficient to open the threshold
- A coin toll paid to the Swamp Gods, deposited as a spiritual offering
The three Oghrann Gates — Osrinro, Osrinray, and Ironclaw — provide physical anchor points for entry into the Road. Each gate corresponds to different branches of the Spirit Road network, though the full topology is known only to the Siv.
The Siv's Role
The Siv guard the Spirit Road as one of their most ancient and sacred responsibilities. Entry without the proper credentials is resisted, and the Siv treat unauthorized access as a profound violation. Their opposition to the Church of the Silverwing Serpent — Dambastra's earthly arm — stems partly from the Church's attempts to subvert Siv control of the Road and intercept spiritual traffic for Dambastra's political ends.
Shiawass, the Siv lord currently operating from Sschindylryn in the Underdark, continues to direct Siv governance of the Road's access points even from his remote position.
The Road as Spiritual Realm
The Spirit Road is not merely a transit network — it is a place where the distinction between the living and the dead becomes unstable. Aromarr Osrin existed within it as a vengeful spirit called Whisper for years after his assassination, until players literally walked him back out into the material world, restoring his flesh.
The road is described as the "etheric pocket dimension where the swamp gods live" — the home plane of the Swamp Gods, which makes it a simultaneously sacred and dangerous space. Access to the gods themselves, in theory, passes through it.
Current Threats
Eadaz — now the Mushroom Queen, having amalgamated with Migma — is actively seeking to enter the Spirit Road. Her motivations remain unclear, but a mycelial intelligence with the power of a druid absorbed into it gaining access to the gods' home plane is considered an existential concern by the Siv.
The Swamp Gods themselves were wounded by the etheric bomb in the The Iron Garden arc; their capacity to protect their own realm from incursion is diminished.
