The Farsea Swamp

The Farsea Swamp — also known as the Farseas, the Farseas Marshes, or historically the Marsh of Tun — is a vast wetland region situated between Cormyr to the east and the western reaches of the Forgotten Realms. It is the primary setting of the The Farsea Chronicles campaign.

Geography

The swamp is split into two distinct ecological zones:

  • The Farseas Swamps (high-altitude): home to sunken ruins, including the ancient dwarven underground complex of Oghrann, and the region's major cities.
  • The Tun Marshes (low-lying): older, wilder, and less politically organized; the ancestral territory of the frog peoples.

The Stormhorns mountain range separates the Farseas from Cormyr's civil centers to the east.

History

Before the founding era, the Farseas served primarily as a refuge for bandits, fugitives, and those with nowhere else to go. The land was rich in natural resources — particularly methane gas geysers and the unusual substance known as The Black Tar — but no organized power had ever found a way to exploit them safely.

That changed when Hiren Kropus, a human explorer from Cormyr, identified the region's methane potential and began building alliances with the Drovers and dwarven settlers already living there. His partnership with Eleanor Osrin and Carcenjo Foxmantle I formed the founding trio that transformed the Farseas from a lawless backwater into a contested resource region.

Peoples

The Farseas is home to a diverse array of peoples:

  • Frog peoples — the original inhabitants; politically organized through the swamp's city-councils
  • Lizard peoples — tribal confederations; the Suh'Skel militant faction originated here
  • Fish peoples — coastal and river-dwelling; traders and navigators
  • Drovers — generational humanoid swamp-dwellers who developed the shared Swamp Creole language
  • Dwarves — historical presence dating to pre-cataclysm times; the Temple of the Guardians and cliff roads attest to deep dwarven roots

Resources

The Farseas' primary resources — the source of all major political conflict — are:

  • Methane gas: harvested from The Geyser Parks; processed by the Guild of Precision; powers lamps and cylinders across Cormyr
  • The Black Tar (Zeftmensch): a malevolent semi-sentient substance with fuel and alchemical applications
  • Hydracephelate: a naturally occurring residue from elemental death; glowing blue; neutralizes the Black Tar

Major Settlements

  • Threetrees — the largest city; built atop massive swamp trees; once governed by a frog and lizardfolk council
  • Nykhas Rest — the first major city; fortified; rich in arcane relics
  • Elden's Crossing — newest city; northwestern Farseas; currently fighting for independence from Cormyr
  • Silverpool — once known for silver waterways; now partially submerged in black tar
  • Wyrmhall (Ironclaw) — industrial fortress of the House Irungarten family
