Chanteclair Osrin

Chanteclair Osrin

Chanteclair Osrin is the current head of House Osrin, managing the family's affairs in the present day. She is competent, composed, and operating in almost total ignorance of the most consequential facts about her own family.

Role and Responsibilities

Chanteclair assumed the leadership of House Osrin in the vacuum left by the apparent deaths of Yorick Osrin and Aromarr Osrin at the hands of Carcenjo Foxmantle II. The family's public operations — the aging network of temples and sanctuaries established by Eleanor Osrin, the Osrin religious mission aligned with Kelemvor, and whatever commercial and political interests survive the current civil war — all flow through her direction.

She has maintained the family with a steadiness that is, in its way, admirable. The Osrins have not collapsed. Their buildings still stand. Their name carries weight in certain quarters of the Cormyrean court.

What She Doesn't Know

Chanteclair is unaware of several facts that would materially alter her decisions:

Yorick Osrin is alive. He survived Carcenjo II's assassination attempt and is hiding in Sschindylryn, a drow city in the north Underdark, sheltered by the Siv lord Shiawass. The woman running House Osrin is not its rightful heir by any reckoning she is aware of.

Aromarr Osrin has been resurrected. Adventurers walked him out of the The Spirit Road and reunited him with Yorick in the Underdark. The family's next generation — believed dead — is alive and in hiding beneath the world.

The Osrin court infiltration programme. In a recent foray to re-establish political influence in Cormyr, the Osrin family replaced certain members of the Cormyrean court with agents impersonating them. The real courtiers are kept sedated in tanks, their consciousness feeding the family's pet intellect devourers. Whether Chanteclair knows the broad strokes of this operation, or is entirely unaware of it, reflects the degree to which the family's more ruthless operations are siloed even from its own head. As those who have encountered the scheme observe: nobody's a saint.

What Happens When She Finds Out

Chanteclair is a character defined as much as anything by dramatic irony: she leads with competence and conviction while the most important truths of her house remain hidden from her. When the news that Yorick lives eventually reaches her — and it will — everything changes. Does she move to bring Yorick home? Does she fear what he knows about operations she may not have sanctioned? Does she act before anyone else can act first?

These are open questions. For now, she leads. And she does not know.
