Tun marshes
Tun Marshes
Disambiguation. Also known as Farsea Swamps, Tunlands, and (the) Farseas.
The Tun Marshes are the lower-lying southern and eastern reaches of the great swamp that stretches beyond the Stormhorns, west of Cormyr's civil center. Where the higher-altitude Farseas proper sit atop the sunken ruins of Oghrann and the deeper tar seams, the Tun Marshes are a broader, shallower expanse of reed flats, brackish channels, and seasonal flood plains drained in part by the Tun River.
Geography
The Tun River serves as a main artery, connecting the Tun Marshes to the Dragonmere and, beyond it, the Sea of Fallen Stars. Travel by river is the most reliable means of reaching the interior of the swamplands from Cormyrean territory; overland approaches via the High Road are possible but slower and more dangerous.
The marshes transition gradually into the deeper Farseas to the west and north, where the canopy grows thicker and the tar seams beneath the water table become more pronounced.
Peoples
The Tun Marshes are home to generations of Drovers — humanoid swamp-dwellers who have lived along the river channels for so long they are considered native. The Tunlar drovers are a recognized sub-identity among the marsh peoples, distinguished by their river-trade customs and a dialect that carries heavier Fish People influences than the broader Swamp Creole.
Lizardpeoples, Bullywugs, and Fishfolk also inhabit the marshes, though the Tun Marshes see more human traffic than the deeper swamp — which brings its own complications.
History
Before the current era, the Tun Marshes and the Farseas were regarded as two distinct wetland zones. The distinction has blurred as the swamps expanded and political administration collapsed under the weight of the civil war following Lucien Kropus's death.
