Vader

Vader Kropus

Vader Kropus was a half-elven merchant-lord, mage, and pragmatist — the second generation of the Kropus House and the man who transformed his father's methane frontier into an empire. Where Hiren Kropus was the visionary explorer and Eleanor Osrin was the moral anchor, Vader was the consolidator: the one who took what the founding trio built and turned it into something lasting.

His death left a void that no one has yet filled. The civil war now tearing the Farseas apart is, in some essential way, the Farseas learning to live without him.

Heritage

Vader was the son of Hiren Kropus, a human explorer and founder of the Farseas methane enterprise. Hiren married an elf or half-elven woman — the details of her identity are not well recorded — and Vader inherited his father's drive alongside his mother's longer horizon. He grew up watching the Farseas take shape around the founding trio's work, and he grew into it deliberately.

His brother was Dranten Kropus. His son, born to his wife Serena Kropus, was Lucien Kropus. When Serena died during Lucien's birth, Vader buried her alongside his forefathers in the Kropus Vault — the same vault where he would eventually be interred himself.

Carcenjo I: The Role Model

Vader never saw Carcenjo Foxmantle I as a rival, though the Foxmantle patriarch was, in commercial terms, the measuring stick against which the Kropus enterprise was always compared. Vader saw Carcenjo as a goal — a role model. The destination he was walking toward.

This distinction mattered. Rivals compete and undermine; role models are studied and internalised. Vader ran Kropus House with the pragmatism of the House Foxmantle — lean, decisive, unsentimental about hard choices — layered over the genuine empathy he had inherited from his father Hiren. It was an unusual combination. It made him harder to predict and harder to hate, even for those who lost to him.

The Methane Empire

Vader continued and expanded the methane operations that Hiren had founded, operating the geyser parks and drilling sites that supplied refined methane to Cormyr and beyond via the Guild of Precision's distribution network. He was the architect of many of the commercial agreements that structured swamp resource extraction for a generation.

He was also a formally trained mage — something few outside his inner circle knew. He kept the knowledge quiet, one of many tools he preferred not to advertise.

His public philosophy was simple: "the power of word before sword." He was, genuinely, a negotiator first. The sword and the magic were there if negotiation failed — but he did not lead with them.

One Eye's Eggs

Among Vader's more notable achievements was his resolution of the One Eye problem. One Eye was a godzilla-scaled crocodile that had terrorised the Farsea settlements for years. Rather than destroying the creature, Vader negotiated a different arrangement: he entombed One Eye's eggs in a vault under the terms of their protection and unfettered incubation. In exchange, One Eye ceased attacking swamp settlements.

The eggs remained in Vader's vault — secured leverage against a predator too large to kill cleanly. After Vader's death, the eggs were removed. Where they ended up is a question still being answered in blood.

Later Years: From Ruthlessness to Family

The Vader of his prime was capable of ruthlessness. The methane industry was not built on kindness, and he made choices that left marks. He did not pretend otherwise.

In his later years, something shifted. The pragmatist's hard edges gave way to a different kind of attention — toward nurturing growth within the family, toward the next generation, toward what would remain after he was gone. He was never sentimental. But the calculus changed.

He was entombed in the Kropus Vault alongside his forefathers and Serena Kropus, who died giving birth to Lucien Kropus.

The Kropus Vacuum

Vader's death created what observers came to call the "Kropus vacuum" — the absence of a stabilising centre in the web of agreements, rivalries, and dependencies that the founding families had built around the Farseas methane trade. Lucien's subsequent death compounded the crisis. Carcenjo Foxmantle II found himself without a Kropus counterpart; the civil war of the current era is, in part, the consequence of that absence.

No one has filled the space Vader occupied. Whether anyone can is a question the Farseas is still asking.
