CloudSpire Chronicles

Every Friday from 7pm PST to Midnight, we play D&D 5th Edition in a world based on Forgotten Realms in the far future.

A diesel punk setting consisting of a world being consumed, floating expansive islands in the sky and the lifestyle that goes with them.

Airships, flotillas, and entire societies trawl the sky seeking their prey, whatever that may be. Upon the surface of Torril, the denizens try to fight against the destructive forces all around them. In the under dark, great and unnatural things take place, gestating and bursting to the surface.

Fluff aside, the world is based in a northern kingdom known was the Cloud Spires mountain range. It is the northern most point of the Spine of the World, which is still known as the Spine of the World.

The entire Cloud Spires mountain range is approximately 100 kilometers.

Due to the entrenched nature of the civilization and the perilous rock formations, air ships must be specially equipped to traverse more than the primary roost provided at the Royals Peak, the highest, flattest and most open pinnacle amidst the many mountain peaks.

Nearby rest many landmarks including Farspine Monestary from the overlooking Farspine mountain peak, Daeds Outreach at Dorums Plateau.

This campaign has a rich pedigree of characters, a growing scope of challenges with a complex range of variables born of the players doings. The campaign is written as a sitcom, where over an average of 5 hours I take my players through a few paces of drama and the battles that may ensue.

While the combat ranges from base to intensely contextual, the story aims to involve everyone to a degree based on what their character needs out of the world.

I take a lot of pride in how this campaign has turned out, and I can't wait to leave it behind for my next story.

Circle

Body

A 'circle' in the Ministry of the Scroll, is the term for a level of study in a field. It is meant to encompass all the teachings required to have a specific level of knowledge.

The term comes from the circular study rooms, where students would be said to sit or stand in the circle together.

Thus a circle of students was a level of students and so the etymology developed.

A circle can be of varying length, and contain a variable amount of content.

A circle of warriorship or priesthood can be earned for 6 months of basic training, or 2 years tour of astral space aboard the Gith ships, for example.

A member of the church is forbidden from practicing both circles simultaneously. Practitioners are tested and graduation from a circle allows one to seek another, from either 'ladder'.

Iralite

Body

Iralite is the Forgotten Realms term given to a radioactive uranium ore that we (IRL) would call Torbernite.

A copper based ore, Iralite is a very green coloured ore that is oddly reactive to magical influences.

Most all radioactive elements find their radioactive qualities nullified by the resident magical influence of Torril, but Iralite is different in that it seems to absorb and react to magical influences.

It also makes a refreshing drink.

Iralite develops from high heat and pressure as well as high alkalidity (acidic) environments. The deposits can grow from a few millimetres to a few centimetres typically. There have been discoveries of larger veins, and occasionally chunky deposits.

Iralite does emit gas as most radioactive material. Experiments have demonstrated that Iralite gassing is variable based on absorption of ethereal energies.

As with the ore itself, the ethereum of Torril nullifies poisonous effects upon humanoid, although it may cause magical effects to go awry (dungeon masters should have fun with it, or simply roll on the wild magic table when spells are cast in an appropriate environment).

Refined Iralite, or 'dried' Iralite, dulls in colour, and is more absorpent however much more brittle and prone to explosion. It is a fine battery for magical energies, if kept in a protective container.

Any one who identifies as a Pelorite is typically a devout individual who attends at least 1 of the 4 weekly gatherings (first or seventh day), be it morning or evening service.

Paladins in the service are an exceptionally loyal band of strength who put the fun (and maybe a bit of mental) in fundamentalist.

ArdraArms

Body

"I think the name is stupid."

~Esther Ardratiche

With the slogan, "You've never seen arms like these," Tursq Ardratiche loves his work. The ArdraArms facility sits across the Royals Peak from the Airship Roost in the north east corner of the city.

The building is stout and wide, with several protruding lengths where airships directly enter and leave with shipments of ammunition.

It employs several hundred people across the capital and several thousand across the kingdom.

Tursq is always on the market for minerals, particularly volatiles ones he can manufacture new things from.

Esther, is always on the look out for things to distract and dissuade Tursq from directly operating ArdraArms. She feels it it functions fine without his intervention.

Frost Berry

Body

The informal term given to Hawthorne berries.

Enjoying hawthorn berry desserts are an important pastime. The variety of winter fruits is extremely limited, so hawthorn berry comes in handy, because it can be stored for months without any problem. Some families tout a family secret recipe to enjoy hawthorn berries and juice.  One such is listed below:

Compared with an apple, a hawthorn fruit has a stronger and fruitier flavor, similar to that of other berries. The finished hawthorn juice has a color and flavor resembling that of cranberry juice, and freshly made hawthorn juice only tastes better.

Mixed with saps and sugars, it is served in taverns with a stroke of whatever alcohol might be available.

Falls Rest

Body

The most easterly city in the Cloud Spires.

Named for the Fall family whose majority resides there, the city is a religious strong hold that has had to hold itself against the Frost Fire many times over.

Despite being one of the first to be attacked, they were one of the last to surrender to dwarven occupation during the Dwarven Wars.

Led by Psygnus Fall, the city has a small and tightly defended roost and high walls surrounding all of the populous.

They have been quick to rebuild after the wars, and quicker to bolster themselves after siding with the magi.

The city boasts a large population of devout Oghmin, while permitting Pelorite practice without any animosity.

Eridanus Fall operates the Pelorite portion of the church in Falls Rest and is quick to layeth the divine smack down upon any who speak ill of either deity.

The city's military is known for their sharp shooting skills, magical abilities and a distinct lack of melee prowess. Since the dwarven wars, their innovations have allowed them to produce cannons of radiant energy that "no airship will resist."

Sols Rest

Body

One of the largest eastern cities in the Cloud Spires kingdom. It is nearly as large as Dodsland and provides the kingdom with a range of minerals as well as some of the hardiest miners and most careful engineers.

With the loss of Sols Rest to the radiant bomb detonated aboard the playerships vessel, a massive blow to the kingdom in both morale, tension and capability was felt.

Like Hiroshima or Nagasaki, the poor city of Sols Rest was blasted apart by reckless behaviour in a time of war.

An inquiry was silently launched soon after wards, and is nearing a reports release.

Several contracts important to the Cloud Spires were soon nullified as production from the citys mining efforts were lost.
Several of the houses that supported the church have backed out.
The great houses of Esquee, Keterog, Saxburg and Vogon have lost vested interests in the region, while a range of minor houses have lost labourers, and a number of resources necessary for their survival.

Specifically speaking, they've lost metals and ore needed to craft what they sell or ship to other regions.

There have been rumours of a new player in the mining game, fresh in from Cormyr who has cited the scorched region to be salvagable and is apparently working with Eddard Reville to plan the rebuild.

The mines are mostly unscathed, with the front entry ways disturbed slightly which in fact prevents them from becoming infested during their down time.

Since Daeds tower was detonated, the plateau has been blasted open and magma rests boiling in the open sore upon the rocky range.

The occasional figure, be it a metal man, or a devil soldier, can be seen falling, either dead or thrown into the pit below.

Commissariat

Body

The following is copied in from Wikipedia.

A commissariat is a department or organization commanded by a commissary or by a corps of commissaries.

In many countries, commissary is a police rank. In those countries, a commissariat is a police station commanded by a commissary.

In some armies, commissaries are logistic officers. In those countries, a commissariat is a department charged with the provision of supplies, both food and forage, for the troops. The supply of military stores such as ammunition is not included in the duties of a commissariat. In almost every army the duties of transport and supply are performed by the same corps of departmental troops.

The Cloud Spires royal houses each provide soldiers who are specially trained to become members of the commissary in Royals Peak.

Each house may provide up to three members, although most provide a single champion, or none at all since Faramore Barl stepped into the role of militia captain, and subsequently the city guard.

With Faramore, a local celebrity, leading the training and maintenance of a primary defense and security force that the houses could count on, the council effectively wrote a blank cheque and the commissariat has dwindled to a trio of 'champions' (including Ivor Keterog, and several retired officers.

Commissary is typically a role for life, or until the body is incapable of providing the people their justice and protection.

Enrolment in another organization does not nullify membership, but refusal to answer the call, without officially denouncing ones position in advance, is seen as a treasonous act.

Amulet of Sin Magia

Body

A circular backing with two vertically intersecting triangles resembling the shape of an hourglass, with a smaller circle over laid upon their intersection. The amulet of Sin Magia belonged to a calishite priest who had reached a point in his patience with magical effects around him. Particularly those coming from the mystics school nearby his home.

In an effort to quell the world within his proximity, he studied at the school and eventually created an amulet for himself (possibly with the help of others) that prevented magical effect within a determinate distance he could choose by fondling the innermost circle of the amulet.

A subject of some repute, the amulet is spoken of jovially among higher brow magical crowds as an impossibility or a reckless endeavor for a mere priest.

Regardless, the legends speak that the amulet provoked the ire of the Sultano Shameer Xaffron who was angered when the amulet knocked out magical powers during a bath causing his water to go cold.

His only request, upon hearing of the priests achievement, was that he turn it off when around the palace.

The amulet was allegedly stolen from the priests tomb years after his demise, and years further after whatever cataclysmic events caused the tomb to be resurfaced.
